People with diabetes are 2–3 times more likely to develop gum disease (periodontitis) and other dental infections. Conversely, untreated gum disease can worsen blood sugar control, making diabetes harder to manage and increasing the risk of diabetic complications also. India has approximately 60 million people with diabetes with numbers rising each passing year. Oral diseases (like gum disease & dental caries) affect almost 60–85% of the population. The gaps in healthcare need to be addressed as diabetes management requires oral and dental screening also for evaluating risk of prediabetes converting to diabetes and controlled diabetes to uncontrolled diabetes. Currently, no formal referral systems exist between doctors and dentists that clearly misses the opportunity for early detection and preventive care.
